GT40P/1129 is one of a batch of five MkVs built to special order to near-Mark II specifications, and it uses a big block motor similar to those which won at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans in 1966. Slightly departing from originality, Safir Engineering preferred an 8.1-litre alloy engine producing 600 HP, to the heavy all-iron 7-litre of the Mark IIs.  Performance is breathtaking, comparable with the best modern “supercars”, top speed being quoted as... 217mph!  Still in the hands of its first owner, this fabulous car has only 33 miles recorded on the clock, this being confirmed by Peter Thorp to be no more than the distance between his house and his workshop. Indeed, Peter drove all the MkVs before delivery.  Needless to say, this GT40 is in as-new condition, and it is very probably the
last “new” GT40 available from the 11xx number series. It’s fully road-legal, and registered as a “1966” car.  MarkVs, being authentic GT40s, are included with the Mark I, II, III and IV in the “Shelby World Registry” edited by the well-respected Shelby American Automobile Club, which compiles records of all authentic Shelby Mustangs, Cobras and GT40s.  Back in the 1980s your webmaster saw MkVs being built, and was treated to a trip in Peter Thorp's prototype, 1090; as a result of both experiences, his admiration of the MkV became, and has remained, extremely high!
